All About Sports

GOOD SPORTS camp is a Homework-Careers-Health & Fitness Camp administered by Carters Corner Inc. GOOD SPORTS is designed for youth between the ages of 13- Graduate School who have a passion for sports and whose parents, guardians, teachers and coaches recognize the influence sports participation can have in motivating youth to participate, compete and achieve both personal and professional goals.

The primary goals of the GOOD SPORTS camp is to provide participating youth with a chance to get out and be active, to learn structure, to gain awareness about non-player sports careers/opportunities, to learn the significance of values and the purpose of rules, work ethic, health awareness and fitness.

60 participating youth will be selected to participate in groups of 20, each group attending camp 5 days per week (Monday-Friday). Participating youth will be picked up from their participating school location on their scheduled camp days and transported to the Carters Corner Sports Management Academy
(1349 E. Lafayette St.).

Upon arrival at a local Service Center participants will be provided an afternoon snack pack and guided into a designated homework and tutoring classroom. Participants will be assisted with homework and provided tutoring as needed by volunteer student tutors from Any local groups, clubs or Universities can assist with educational help.

Next, participants will transition into a 30 minute workshop each day facilitated by partners from Carter’s Corner a Sports Management Foundation who will discuss a range of topics on career planning and health education. Career planning workshops will focus on non-player sports careers; coaching, facilities management, officiating, athletic trainers, agents, recruiters, money management, sports journalism, recreation, events coordinators, statistician etc. The health and education workshops will include

discussions about the basic food groups, tips on healthy eating such as eating breakfast, eating lunches (whole grain sandwiches, lean meats, vegetable’s etc.), eating healthy snacks (fruits/vegetables), exercising and fitness.

In the final transition of the afternoon the youth will board transportation to a local training facility. Upon arrival at the training facility participants will be greeted by professional trainers and given instruction for their daily workout.  The initial training day will involve participants taking part in a series of preliminary screening activities that will be useful in tracking their progress throughout camp. The daily routine of the training will help to teach participants about structure, the purpose, importance and the process of warming up, exercising and cooling down.

At the completion of the workout participants will be provided with sufficient time to replenish bodily fluids through provisions of gator ade or water made available by the GOOD SPORTS camp.  Participants will then be transported by bus back to their respective school location.

In addition, and as an opportunity to experience one of the most rewarding non-player sports jobs (journalism), each participating youth will take part in the creation of a Group Documentary on their experience in the GOOD SPORTS camp. Each week participating youth will be assisted by staff in use of photojournalism equipment provided to complete development and production of their camp experience.

A copy of the documentary will be presented to each participating youth as a reward for their participation and as a memorable recognition of their accomplishments in the Goodwill GoodGuides – GOOD SPORTS camp.
